The University of Jaffna thanks His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa for helping for the development of both the Faculties of Agricultural and Engineering at Kilinochchi at the event held at DS office in Kilinochchi on 13th October 2014.
History of the development of the Faculty of Engineering: In 1979, the Senate and Council of the University of Jaffna appointed a committee to submit proposal to establish the Faculty of Engineering and comprehensive report submitted in 1980. In 1987, the UGC appointed expert committee was appointed and give recommendation to establish the Faculty of engineering in 1988 at Kilinochchi. In 1990 a Professor of Civil Engineering and Two technicians were appointed to prepare plans to commence the building works and to design the curriculum. In 2002, the proposal was revised by the committee appointed by the Senate of the University of Jaffna and revised proposal was submitted in 2002 to the UGC. In 2012, Cabinet of Ministers approved to commence the Faculty of Engineering at Killinochchi with four Departments. On 24th February 2014, first batch of engineering students were admitted with temporary small buildings while waiting for the approval of faculty building complex. The faculty building complex worth of 1520 million rupees construction was commenced on 14th of June 2014. Another 800 million for equipment and 200 million approved for furniture. Further, 300 million rupees is approved to be given by the Indian Government to construct a building for Mechanical Engineering, and to purchase workshop equipment and other facilities.
Currently, mid-semester examinations of the second semester are being conducted for the first batch of students. The second batch of students will be registering to the Faculty on 26th November and the orientation program will start on 1st December 2014.
The faculty was brought to reality with number of hard workers. It is an excellent effort of number of professionals headed by the Senior Professor Vasanthy Arasaratnam, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, with the great supports from political members headed by His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa supported by Higher Education Minister Honorable S.B. Dissanayake and Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Honorable Douglas Devananda.
