Dr. T. Thiruvaran visited the University of New South Wales in Australia during the vacation period, from 25th May till 31st July on invitation from Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah, Head of the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, who was also helping a lot to contribute to the development of the curriculum, preparation of course materials, lecture notes, giving guidance to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Jaffna. During this visit, Dr. Thiruvaran was updating his research path with the leading University in Australia while strengthening the collaboration between UNSW and University of Jaffna. These visits to foreign leading University and collaborative work with foreign Universities will strengthen the Faculty of Engineering towards better quality of teaching and research.
Mr. Neorooshan Durairaja’s excellent performance in freshers’ inter faculty athletic meet
The University of Jaffna freshers’ inter faculty athletic meet was held on 25th and 26th, July 2015. Students from eight faculties participated in this grand sports meet. From Faculty of Engineering, Mr. Durairaja Neorooshan achieved 1st place in 10,000 m and 3,000 m and 2nd place in 5,000 m long distance race. Highway materials testing CPD course for technical officers of the Road Development Department
Department of Civil Engineering has successfully conducted a CPD course for the technical officers of Road Development Department (RDD). The course was conducted for 9 days during the vacation period of the Faculty of Engineering between 22nd May 2015 and 25th July 2015. Dr. A. Anburuvel, the resource person for the course, designed and conducted the course on the request of Mr. S. Meihandan, Deputy Team Leader, Vic Roads, International Project.

Cricket match between RDD and Faculty staff
A CPD program on highway construction materials testing was conducted by Dr. A. Anburuvel, from the Department of Civil Engineering, to technical officers from RDD to enhance their experimental skills. On 23rd July 2015, at the end of the program, a friendly cricket encounter between the RDD and Faculty staff members was organized at the cricket ground of the Kilinochchi premises of the University of Jaffna. Eng. Kugan N. Kuganenthira’s visit to the Faculty and donation of camera from Eng. P. Pratheepan
Eng. P. Pratheepan donated a DSLR camera to the Faculty of Engineering. On behalf of him, Eng. Kugan N. Kuganenthira handed over the camera to the Dean and Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Engineering during his visit to the faculty on 23rd July 2015. We thank Engineer P. Pratheepan whole heartedly for his valuable donation.
Faculty staff participated in the workshop on Small and Medium Enterprise Sector Energy Efficiency Program
The workshop provided an excellent exposure to the knowledge in energy efficiency, energy management and energy auditing subject areas. This SME energy efficiency workshop was held on 20th and 21st July 2015 in Jaffna. Two staff members, Dr. V. Cynthujah, Mr. S. Thananjeyan and two students participated in this workshop. The workshop was planned with a special focus on North and East Sri Lanka.
Donation of Rheostats from Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Peradeniya to Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna.
Prof J.B. Ekanayake, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and his team helped the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna. There were continuous helps received for the selection board, teaching, laboratory development and got their views on the curriculum. Further 10th July 2015, few rheostats were given to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna to help the students’ laboratory experiments and their projects work. Major portion of the waste oil sludge is converted into usable product as grease
The problem in brief: The Northern Province was shaken by number of community actions due to the waste oil disposal on the ground. This was due to negligence of the relevant authorities, which were supposed to protect the environment and the people.
The project: The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna is objectively looking to minimize wastages by reusing where ever possible that in turn will protect the environment from contamination and pollution. The faculty trains undergraduate students with a focus on finding solutions to the community problems as a win (community) – win (industries/authorities) – win (researchers for sustainable research) solutions.
Team from University of Jaffna attended WaSo annual meeting, WaSo Post-doctoral programme and WaSo summer school courses at Oslo, Norway.
WaSo annual project meeting was held during 27th June to 3rd July 2015. Many professionals attended to the meeting by representing almost all the counties of WaSo Asia (Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Bangladesh), WaSo Africa (Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Kenya) and Norway. The main part of WaSo project meetings was held on board of M/S Colour Fantasy, which is one of the largest ships in the world. There were another meetings at NORADs Head Office in Oslo, as well as the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.
