Dr. Kasivisvanathan Chelvakumar visited the Faculty of Engineeringon 28th August 2015 and hold discussions with dean and the staff about the possible services he can render to the Faculty. He agreed to come and serve the mechanical Engineering section of the department of Interdisciplinary studies on contract basis in the near future. We consider his vast knowledge and experience will immensely contribute to the development of the mechanical engineering as well to the faculty. As we are lacking of senior staff members in mechanical engineering presently, his timely assistance is very much appreciated.
Eng. Ajith Alwis delivered a talk at the Faculty on “Solar Power Technologies”
The faculty invited Eng. Ajith Alwis, on 28th August 2015, to deliver a talk on solar power for the first batch of students, who are specializing in the field of Electrical and Electronic engineering. It is also part of the course unit on Electric Power (EC4030) in their fourth semester of study. This course unit expects to provide a detailed study on power generation. Renewable energy generation is one of the promising topics, which will be discussed in detail in this course. In order to provide more knowledge on latest development in wind and solar power generation, a guest lecture is included as part of the course.
Civil Engineering Student Society is formed at the University of Jaffna
Inaugural meeting of civil engineering students’ society was held on 28th August 2015. The office bearers were selected by members: (i) President- Mr. S. Mayooran, (ii) Secretary- Miss. V. Tharsikka, (iii) Vice president- Mr. K. Thanusan, (iv) Treasurer- Mr. J. Luxan, (v) Editor- Mr. N. Anusuthan and Senior Treasurer- Dr. Daniel Subramaniam.
Mr. Sunith Fernando delivered a talk at the Faculty
Mr. Sunith Fernando is an expert in Wind Power Generation who has hands on experience of 40 years in Renewable Energy Development in Sri Lanka. Hence, his lecture was a valuable resource for the undergraduates. The faculty invited him, on 28th August 2015, to deliver a talk on wind power for the first batch students, who are specializing in the field of Electrical and Electronic engineering. It is also part of the course unit on Electric Power (EC4030) in their fourth semester of study.
Eng. N. Sivaruban visited the Faculty and donated books for the library
Eng. N. Sivaruban is a Professional Engineer specialized in Structural Engineering, working at Ensco Plc, an Offshore Drilling Contractor. He visited the Faculty on 26th August 2015. He discussed about the donation of books and delivered two boxes of books, which are very useful to the students. There were 173 books in the donation. Further, he also discussed with some of the staff members about future collaboration. He is also one of the active team members of the Care for Education, rendering number of services for uplifting the education system, from USA, who also helps to develop the curriculum of the Faculty of Engineering by connecting leading professors all over the world.
Eng. Nadarajah Surendran delivered a talk at the Faculty
Eng Surendran delivered a one hour talk to the first batch students, who are specializing in Civil Engineering on 26th August 2015. In his speech he covered structural engineering and its latest technological development, introduction to the Eurocodes and general topics such as communication skills including report writing. It was a very good motivational talk and the students got motivated to form the Civil Engineering Student Society to conduct a number of activities.
Dr. Suneth Namal Karunarathna is helping the Faculty on a visiting basis
Dr. Suneth Namal Karunarathna, Senior Lecturer from Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, is helping the Faculty as visiting lecturer from 21st August 2015. He obtained BSc (Eng) Hon. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Peradeniya in 2007. He did his Master of Science degree at the Department of Networks and Multimedia Services at Telecom SudParis in Paris France in 2010. He obtained his Master of Engineering degree in 2010 from the Department of Telecommunication Engineering at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand. He obtained the PhD in 2014 from the Department of Communications Engineering at University of Oulu in Finland.
Dr. Roshan G. Ragel is helping the Faculty on visiting basis
Dr. Roshan Ragel, Senior Lecturer from Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, is helping the Faculty as a visiting lecturer from 14th August 2015. He obtained his BSc (Eng) Hon. in Computer Engineering from the University of Peradeniya in 2001 and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from University of New South Wales in 2007. His research interest is in Micro-architectural aspects of Embedded Systems Design and their Security and Reliability issues.
Dr. Achela Fernando is helping the Faculty on visiting basis
Dr. Achela Fernando, Adjunct Senior Lecturer from Griffith School of Engineering Nathan Campus Griffith University Australia, is helping the Faculty as visiting lecturer from 12th August 2015. She obtained BSc (Eng) Hon. Civil Engineering from University of Peradeniya in 1987. Her MEng degree was in Environmental & Sanitary Engineering, obtained from Kyoto University, Japan in 1992. She obtained her PhD from University of Hong Kong in 1997. She worked in many countries, obtained number of awards and publications and a well experienced lecturer.
Professor Sri Sritharan delivered a talk at the Faculty
Professor Sri Sritharan from the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at Iowa State University delivered a talk and held a discussion with the staff on 12th August 2015. The discussion touched on the possibility of future collaboration on a visiting basis. It was an excellent motivational talk for the students. The talk covered engineering education in general and concluded with laying out the path of technological growth in Engineering.
