GIZ organized a meeting with the top level delegates from Germany to boost the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SME) in the Country. As a result, it was focused to have the meeting in Northern Province. A meeting was arranged at the Kilinochchi premises (covering both Faculty of Engineering and Agriculture) on 30th November 2015. Mr. Wolfgang Hruschka from Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Germany with his delegates attended this event.
E16 fresh students visited Iranamadu Irrigation Development Project
75 students of E16 batch of university of Jaffna visited Iranamadu reservoir and irrigation systems in Northern Province on 30th Nov 2016. They have visited Iranamadu reservoir, LB and RB canals, irrigation structures and their canal network. Students got golden opportunity to visit ongoing constructions of Iranamadu spillway, dam and bridge. Eng. N. Suthakaran, Deputy Director of Irrigation – Kilinochchi Range and Project Director – Iranamadu Irrigation Development Project (IIDP) delivered a presentation to the fresh students. He guided students on explain how and where engineering is applied in industry while taking them through the field visit. Every batch is visiting Iranamadu during their orientation programme and N. Suthakaran is always helping the faculty.
Faculty students were elected to the IESL YMS at the Head Office in Colombo
The inaugural meeting of the IESL YMS (Young Members Section) was held on the 27th of November, 2016 at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium, IESL Head Office. The following students were representing the IESL Students Chapter of Faculty of Engineering, UoJ at the meeting: S. Nidershan, Priyantha, Prabath Dissanayake, Dimuth Bopitiya, Muditha Kumarasiri, S.Sangar and Yasindu Sandaruwan.
Faculty staff attended the “CodeCraft 2017” Competition launching ceremony:
Dr. A. Kaneswaran, Head of the Department of Computer Engineering and Prof. A. Atputharajah attended the “CodeCraft” competition launching ceremony on 25th November 2016 at Hall Ruby, Hilton Colombo. Codecraft completion opening ceremony was graced by Hon. Minister of Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Harin Fernando. CodeCraft is a nationwide competition for students, professionals, colleges, and corporates. This competition has been endorsed by the Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Ministry of Higher Education and Highways, University Grants Commission, ICT Agency of Sri Lanka and the IT-BPM and Knowledge Services Industry Chamber (SLASSCOM).
Faculty staff participated to the workshop on Effective Research Higher Degree Supervision Practices
A workshop on “Effective Research Higher Degree Supervision Practices for the PhD Supervisors” was organized as part of the collaboration of the University of Melbourne together with the University Grant Commission. This was conducted by Professor Sophie Arkoudis, who is the Associate Director and Professor in Higher Education, Melbourne CSHE. She shared the experience on guiding the research students at the Melbourne with the University staff members in Sri Lanka. Four staff members from each University participated to this workshop. A workshop on Institutional Quality Assurance Enhancement workshop was held 22nd to 24th November 2016. This was organized specially for the staff members, who were the members of the Internal Quality Assurance Unit (IQAU) of the University of Jaffna (UOJ).

Electrical and Electronic Engineering Society (EEES) organized a talk on “ICT Perspective” on 24th of November 2016 from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. at Lecture hall 2. This talk was done by Dr. Shanmugalingam Sivasothy, R&D Technical Expert at Astellia, Rennes Area, France.

E16 fresh students visited around the University premises at Ariviyal Nagar
75 students entered to the E16 batch of faculty of Engineering, university of Jaffna on 21st November 2016. To familiar with university surrounding, they have visited Ariviyal Nagar university premises on 22nd November 2016. They have visited Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Technology, Laboratories, Agriculture farms, hostels and surroundings. They took the first batch photo in front of old Engineering faculty admin building for remembrance. Mr. Vignarajah organized the visit and Mr. Vignarajah and Mr. Sampath and second year students guided them during visit.
Inauguration of 4th batch of students (E16 batch)
The fourth batch with 75 students was inaugurated on 21st November 2016. The Faculty took first batch with 39 students on 21st February 2014 in small buildings. Orientation program for the first batch was held for 6 weeks to allow the students smoothly settled in the new environment with poor facility in 2014.However, students learnt a lot by visiting to over 20 industrial visits. The second batch was taken with 54 students on 1st December 2014 and again in small buildings with reasonable facilities. For them also the orientation program was held for 5 weeks as to allow them to settled properly while get to use to the environment. The students were also taken for over 15 industries for orient them towards Engineering Education. The third batch of students were taken with 48 students on 9th November 2015.
The IESL YMS UOJ Chapter had lunch time discussion with the IESL President
Eng. J. Meegoda, President of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), visited to the Faculty on 19th November 2016. The IESL Younger Members Chapter of the University of Jaffna, together with the dean and staff of the Faculty of Engineering met him for a discussion. It was very fruitful discussion about the 2017 activities of the IESL YMS UOJ.
