A workshop on “Effective Research Higher Degree Supervision Practices for the PhD Supervisors” was organized as part of the collaboration of the University of Melbourne together with the University Grant Commission. This was conducted by Professor Sophie Arkoudis, who is the Associate Director and Professor in Higher Education, Melbourne CSHE. She shared the experience on guiding the research students at the Melbourne with the University staff members in Sri Lanka. Four staff members from each University participated to this workshop. A workshop on Institutional Quality Assurance Enhancement workshop was held 22nd to 24th November 2016. This was organized specially for the staff members, who were the members of the Internal Quality Assurance Unit (IQAU) of the University of Jaffna (UOJ).

E16 fresh students visited around the University premises at Ariviyal Nagar
75 students entered to the E16 batch of faculty of Engineering, university of Jaffna on 21st November 2016. To familiar with university surrounding, they have visited Ariviyal Nagar university premises on 22nd November 2016. They have visited Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Technology, Laboratories, Agriculture farms, hostels and surroundings. They took the first batch photo in front of old Engineering faculty admin building for remembrance. Mr. Vignarajah organized the visit and Mr. Vignarajah and Mr. Sampath and second year students guided them during visit.
Inauguration of 4th batch of students (E16 batch)
The fourth batch with 75 students was inaugurated on 21st November 2016. The Faculty took first batch with 39 students on 21st February 2014 in small buildings. Orientation program for the first batch was held for 6 weeks to allow the students smoothly settled in the new environment with poor facility in 2014.However, students learnt a lot by visiting to over 20 industrial visits. The second batch was taken with 54 students on 1st December 2014 and again in small buildings with reasonable facilities. For them also the orientation program was held for 5 weeks as to allow them to settled properly while get to use to the environment. The students were also taken for over 15 industries for orient them towards Engineering Education. The third batch of students were taken with 48 students on 9th November 2015.
The IESL YMS UOJ Chapter had lunch time discussion with the IESL President
Eng. J. Meegoda, President of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), visited to the Faculty on 19th November 2016. The IESL Younger Members Chapter of the University of Jaffna, together with the dean and staff of the Faculty of Engineering met him for a discussion. It was very fruitful discussion about the 2017 activities of the IESL YMS UOJ.
Workshop on “Five year strategic plan” to Kilinochchi schools’ principals

A workshop was initiated by Mr. M. Kanapathipillai, who is former principal of the Royal College and Council Member of the University of Jaffna. This was organized by the Zonal Director of Education office of the Kilinochchi on 19th November 2016. Here the two Deans of the Faculties: Prof. (Mrs.) Thushyanthy Mikunthan – Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Prof. A. Atputharajah – Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, together with Mr. M. Kanapathipillai conducted this workshop.

A full-day workshop on the theme “Designing Active Learning for Engineering Education” was conducted by the Accreditation Board of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) head office in Colombo on 15th November 2016. This was intended for university academic staff involved in curriculum development.

Field Trip of Faculty students to study the Wave Theory and Coastal Engineering
Wave theory and coastal engineering is a technical elective course offered for students in their 6th semester of study in the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering. As part of the curriculum, the students visited specific locations along the Northern coastal belt of Sri Lanka (Mannar, Mullaitivu and Trincomalee) to study the coastal morphology, beach profiling and coastal waves.
