The Commercial Loa Development Program U.S. Department of Commerce of the U.S. Embassy in Colombo organized the world IP Day seminar at the Taj Samudra Hotel on 26th April 2017. This was organized in coordination with the University Grant Commission (UGC), National Intellectual Property Organization (NIPO), United State Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This was funded by Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs U.S. State Department and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Faculty staff participated to the ABB seminar on NEPLAN Power system Toolbox
The ABB Global Service Head Mr Jari Kaija, along with Mr Madhav Vemuri, Cluster Service Head had a seminar at University of Moratuwa on 26th April 2017. Here the ABB had a formal session to handover the license free software for the university students. This software was made available by ABB for universities under the name of “NEPLAN Power system Toolbox” with a server license for 25 concurrent users (ideal for lab batches) for a tenure of 6/12 months.
Drawing Instruments donation from the Tamil Engineers Foundation (Engineering Charity Fund Australia)
The Tamil Engineering Foundation is continuously helping the Faculty of Engineering by donating 25 Drawing Instruments to the Engineering Students Union (ESU). This event took place on 25th April 2017. Presently, ESU lend drawing instruments to the students when they need it for a small amount of rent. This rental plan was first proposed by the first batch and continues successfully for the second and third batch too. Many financially disadvantaged students benefitted by this instrument rental plan. As the ESU wanted to buy additional instruments to suffice the need of additional student intake, the donation was very timely and helpful with adding the capital. We wholeheartedly thank the donors Tamil Engineers Foundation for their invaluable assistance.
Faculty staff attended the special meeting of the IESL power sector committee to discuss the Draft National Energy Policy
A special meeting of the IESL Power Sector Committee was organized on 25th April 2017 to discuss the Draft National Energy Policy and Strategies of Sri Lanka. This was published by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA). SLSEA requests for public comments, inputs and observations to further improve the policy. It was asked to give professionals view for five minutes with prior written submission to this meeting. Professor A. Atputharajah, Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, participated to this meeting and gave his overall view.
Soft skill development program to the students
It has been notified as one of the common problem is lag of soft skill development. As a result six weeks of soft skill program is initiated at the Faculty board and applied to the students during their 12 weeks of break. Therefore among the 12 weeks break after the first semester, the students will be spending 6 weeks in the Faculty to follow these programs. These programs are different from each other and they are enjoyable and interesting to the students.
Faculty staff participated to the Sri Lanka University Intellectual Property Policy Workshop
Introduction:The Sri Lanka University Intellectual Property Policy Workshop was organized by Commercial Law Department Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce in cooperation with the Sri Lanka University Grant Commission (UGC) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This was held in Taj Samudra Hotel Colombo from 24th to 27th April 2017. All the Universities Vice Chancellors participated during the first day of the program. Dean and Mr. R. Valluvan, the coordinator of the University Business Linkage Cell of the Faculty of Engineering, participated to this workshop all three days. Resource persons were Richard Cahoon, Yumiko Hamano and Anthony Williams. This was excellent workshop clearly given the scope of the workshop. The faculty thanks the U.S. Embassy Colombo and the UGC for organizing this workshop.
Faculty staff and students participated to the workshop on Watershed and River Flow Modeling
Mr. D.S. Sampath, Lecturer, Mr. Ashan Madhushka and Mr. Tharanga Buddhimal, final year students attended training workshop on Watershed and River Flow Modeling using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS on 24th and 25th April 2017 at the Open University of Sri Lanka, Colombo. This workshop was organized by section C of Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Science (SLAAS). Dr. Jayantha Obesekara, Chief Modeler, South Florida Water Management District and Affiliate Research Professor, Florida Atlantic University, USA, conducted workshop as resource person. The workshop covered the following topics including computer based simulation activities: (i) Water modeling using HEC-HMS, (ii) Water Modelling using HEC-RAS, (iii) QGIS and (iv) HEC-DSSVue.
Appreciation to Professor Vasanthy Arasaratnam
A gathering was organized with the Vice Chancellor and all the deans to give appreciation to Professor Vasanthy Arasaratnam for her dedication on serving the University of Jaffna during the last six years (two terms) at the capacity of the Vice Chancellor. This was conducted on 22nd April 2017. The large number of infrastructure developments were taken places during her period to the University of Jaffna. This was the Golden period in terms of infrastructure development after ending the conflict situation in the country. Her services were very well appreciated by all the faculties of the University of Jaffna.
Meeting with Mathematic teachers at Kilinochchi District
It was notified that in general that the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) stream students need to be motivated much higher level than the ongoing system. Therefore as a first step, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering had discussion with the Zonal Director of Education (ZDE) Kilinochchi. As a result the ZDE organized a discussion with the mathematics teachers in Kilinochchi zonal area on 19th April 2017. The meeting was held at the conference room of the ZDE Kilinochchi office starting from 1:45pn till 5:00pm. Professor A. Atputharajah – Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. P. Kathirgamanathan – Senior Lecturer teaching Engineering Mathematics and Mr. Thuraiyappa – Assisting on teaching of Engineering Mathematics were participated in this discussion. Almost all the mathematics teachers in the Kilinochchi Zone were participated. Representative from the Engineering Student Union (ESU) also participated to carefully do the follow up on the discussion points.
Dr. Navaratnarajah Sathiparan appointed as member of the University Research Committee
Dr. N. Sathiparan appointed as the member to the University Research Committee (URC). He is representing the Faculty of Engineering from April 2017. This is a three years appointment.
