Dean Professor A. Atputharajah and University Business Linkage Coordinator Mr. R. Valluvan participated to the workshop on IP Management, Technology Commercialization for Technology Managers of Hub & spoke Institutions. This was held from 30th October till 4th November 2017. Both of the Dean and Coordinator attended to the first day and Continued by Mr. R. Valluvan for the other four days. This workshop was organised by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with Sri Lanka’s Coordinating Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI), National Intellectual Property Office (NIPO) and with the Assistance of the Japan Patent Office (JPO). This was held in Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo. It was so excellent workshop from the resource persons, who had few decades of experience in this field.
Dean Attended to the CVCD Conference on “Changing Higher Education Landscape in Sri Lanka – Challenges and Opportunities”
The CVCD conference 2017 was held on 26th October 2017. All the top officers of the Higher Education Systems were presented. The University Grant Commission Chairman and Vice Chairman, Vice Chancellors of all the Universities, Deans of the Faculties in Sri Lankan Universities, Registrars and other related officers were participated. The His Excellency Presidents, Ministers were also invited to the inaugural sessions. It was excellent knowledge sharing sessions with the foreign experts on changing the Higher Education Landscape.
Government of India Vehicles to Kilinochchi Premises
A Grant from the Government of India, total of 600 million Sri Lankan Rupees (300 million rupees for Faculty of Agriculture and 300 million rupees for Faculty of Engineering), buildings, vehicles, equipment, library books and training together with staff exchange program were planned. As planned the buildings works were completed and opened on 30th June 2017. then the vehicles were purchased as follow up actions after the buildings were completed and opened. An event was organized to handing over the vehicles on 23rd October 2017.
The event was blessed with the Head of the Development Cooperation wind from Indian Embassy Eng. D.C. Manjunath, Consul General of India in Jaffna Mr. A. Natarajan and the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor R. Vigneswaran. Deans of Faculties, Professors, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Non Academic Staff Members and Students were participated. Further Provincial Directors, Managers, Engineers and other Government officials also participated in the ceremony. In this ceremony, 34 million (excluding taxes) rupees worth of six vehicles were handed over:
- One 54 seated A/C Bus
- One 26 seated A/C Bus
- One double cab
- One single cab pickup
- Tractor
- One Safari Jeep
The University of Jaffna sincerely thank the Government of India for their support to the Faculties of Agriculture and Engineering. Further the Sri Lankan Government officials from the University Grant Commission, Ministry of Higher Education and Treasury for their team work to get this support very successfully. Initial Discussion on implementing the E-Kalvi Programs at Schools
The E-Kalvi program was initially done by the Dr. Ethirveerasingam together with other team of members from the office of the Provincial Director of Education and office of the Planning section of the Ministry of Education. This was to prepare the CDs and distribute to the schools.
Then the Jaffna University Graduate Association Victoria Branch in Australia, picked it up seriously by preparing it with USB using html format, where it was so easy to use. Further there were not only give the USB but also gave related other supportive equipment such as computer/laptops, projector, head phones and projector screen. This helps the students, who were learning in E-Kalvi Centers in few districts, to use it in smooth manner. This E-Kalvi team was headed by the below members as a branch from the Jaffna Graduate Association – Victoria Branch in Australia.
Staff Welfare Society was formed at the Faculty of Engineering
The faculty human resource was growing rapidly when included academic and nonacademic staff members. To strengthen the team work and relationship while helping each other, it was discuss for a period of time to form a common welfare society. As a result on 19th October 2017, a meeting was conducted by inviting all the staff members and the welfare society was formed. Here Mrs. Janaki Aravintharaj (Assistant Registrar) was selected as the Chairperson, Mr. Saliya Sampath (Lecturer) was selected as the Secretary and Mr. M. Sasitharagurukkal (Technical Officer) was selected as the Treasurer. Then others were selected as a committee members. The faculty planning to have annual events to strengthen the human relationship among all the staff members.
IESL – TECHNO EXHIBITION -13th to 14th October 2017
Students from Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna participated in the TECHNO exhibition organized by the IESL and held in BMICH from 13th to 15th October 2017. They participated in Robo Games, CAD-Eager and TIC-TAC-TOE competitions. The competition TIC-TAC-TOE was organized by the students of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna.
Guest Lecture “How to Achieve Academic Excellence”
Professor C. Sivayogananthan delivered a guest lecture to the staff of the Faculties of Engineering, Technology and Agriculture at Kilinochchi Premises. This was held on 13th October 2017 from 11:00 am till 12:30 pm at the Seminar room, Administration building of the Faculty of Engineering. This was organized by the Faculty Building. It was an excellent talk on delivering the ethics, effective and efficient way of achieving the academic excellence. It was an excellent talk empowered the staff of the Faculties at the Kilinochchi premises. All the faculty staff thank Professor C. Sivayogananthan for delivering the guest lecture.
Professor C. Sivayogananthan entered to the University of Peradeniya in 1967 and obtained B.Sc.Agriculture (Ceylon) in 1971. then he got M.Agr.St. from University of Queensland in Australia in 1979 and PhD in Texas from USA in 1982. he was serving in many aspects such as :

Mr. Mugilgeethan receives the best student award from University of Ruhuna
Mr. Mugilgeethan, who is a lecturer at the Mechanical Engineering section of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, obtained the best student award for the graduates in the category of best undergraduate researcher considering his academic performance of the modules relevant to the area of undergraduate research. The award was given by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna, where he carried out his bachelor’s degree. The award ceremony was held on 13th October 2017 at the Engineering Faculty auditorium at University of Ruhuna, Galle. The Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna congratulate him for his achievement.
Staff Members participated to the Venture Engine 2017
Professor A. Atputharajah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Mr. R. Valluvan, Coordinator of the Incubation Center, participated to the Venture Engine 2017 events. This was held 11th October 2017 at the Cinnamon Lakeside hotel. It was very successful platform for accelerating and expanding the country’s most promising entrepreneurial ideas. It was held in conjunction with Asian Business Angles Forum (ABAF), which is Asia’s largest Start-up investor forum. It is also unprecedented conduit for Sri Lanka entrepreneurs to gain access to investment, expertise and direct mentor-ship from some of the Asian region’s most prominent investors via the ABAF platform. The organizer of Lankan Angel Network is happy to continue to accept new ideas for investment, more details on this can be viewed from http://www.lankanangelnetwork.com. It was excellent experience to realize the numerous opportunities for entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka to raise up on their business.
Workshop on GBV Awareness and prevention
Dr. M. Siyamalan and Ms. R. Rohini were attended a workshop on Gender Based Violence (GBV) Awareness and Prevention, which was conducted at the Green Grass Hotel, Jaffna on 10th and 11th of October 2017 and organized by the University of Jaffna. The resource persons of this workshop were:

In this workshop, the University of Jaffna’s GBV policy and bylaws, awareness of GBV and GBV preventive mechanisms were discussed. There were around 30 participants, from the University of Jaffna, attended this workshop.
