Presentation on IIT Gandhinager experience by the students of the Faculty of Engineering

Three Mechanical and Process Engineering final year undergraduate students from the faculty got a golden opportunity to spend their 12 weeks of special industrial training period as summer research interns at the (IITGN) Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The expenses in India was totally sponsored by the IITGN. The students were engaged in this research internship program from the 27th of March to the 16th of June 2017. Those three students Mr. Nidershan and Mr. Neethan and Ms. Dinusha Wickramaarachchi had expressed their real experience at the IITGN during their training period. This presentation was organized by the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies to the students of the Faculty of Engineering on 10th July 2017. It was excellent to hear their experiences with excellent achievements and team work with IITGN students.

Workshop on “Internet of Things”

Workshop on “Internet of Things” was held at Department of Computer Engineering on 8th July 2017 with the support of IT and Communication Engineering Sectional Committee of the Institution of Engineering Sri Lanka (IESL). Objective of the workshop was to boost the understanding of engineering students on IoT and enhance the awareness of applications of IoT in various industries. More than 50 undergraduate students and staff members attended this workshop.

Seminar on Marketing Strategies by Visiting American expert Cheryl

American embassy officers and the resource person visited to the Faculty as educational initiatives program on 7th July 2017. The officers’ team included Mr. James Russo (Counselor for Press, Academic, and Cultural Affairs from the American Embassy), Ms. Cheryl Edison (visiting American expert/resource person and Serial Entrepreneur and global strategist) and Ms. Sharmini Sinniah (Outreach Coordinator, Public Diplomacy Office of the American Embassy). Initially the team had a discussion with the Dean, Heads of the Departments and lecturers. It was good to learn the opportunities of number of possible services that the faculty students can be benefited from the embassy.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering Society of the University of Jaffna organized a talk on “The biological impact of Natural and Electrical Light on Human Health” on 6th of July 2017 from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. at Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This talk was conducted by Dr. Uthayan Thurairajah, Researcher, Senior Electrical Engineer, Scientist, and Lecturer with over 20 years of experience in the Electrical Engineering and Lighting Design field. .

Faculty staff attended to the WaSo Postdoctoral Program at Norway

Dr. B. Ketheesan from Department of Civil Engineering, UoJ and Prof. Mrs. Kuganathan, from Department of Fishery Sciences, UoJ, attended the WaSo Post-Doctoral Program. The main venue for the WaSo Post-Doctoral Program was UiB Global, University in Bergen, Norway. It was conducted from 10th June to 5th July 2017 and other venues were University of Telemark, Bø and Oslo, Norway. The WaSo Post-Doctoral Program starts at the same time as the Bergen Summer Research School (BSRS) 2017. Also, they attended NORHED and WaSo Annual Project Meetings in Telemark and Oslo from 1st July to 5th July 2017. This program was organized by Water Society and Climate Change project.

Faculty staff attended to the NORHED WaSo Annual meeting at Norway

Dr. S.S. Sivakumar, Coordinator of WaSo project of UoJ and Mr. Saliya Sampath, Secretary of WaSo project of UoJ attended NORHED and WaSo Annual Project Meeting in Oslo from 1st July to 5th July 2017. Dr. B. Ketheesan from Department of Civil Engineering, UoJ and Prof. Mrs. Kuganathan, from Department of Fishery Sciences, UoJ, also attended the meeting while their postdoctoral program. There was a special session on the topic of ‘how to become ideal supervisor’ on 2nd and 3rd July 2017. There was a meeting for all the WaSo secretaries on 3rd July and Sampath attended the meeting from the University of Jaffna. Meeting was held at University of Telemark, Bø and NORAD Head Office at Oslo, Norway. This program was organized by Water Society and Climate Change project.

Workshop held to develop the curriculum for a Master Degree Program in Clean Energy Technologies

A full day workshop was held with the staff from the Faculties of Science, Engineering and Technology of the University of Jaffna in 3rd July 2017. This was held at the Faculty of Science starting from 9:30am till 4:00pm. This is to develop the curriculum for starting a Master Degree Program in Clean Energy Technologies. This was funded by the Norwegian Partnership Program for Global Academic Cooperation (NORPART) as part of the Higher education and Research collaboration on Nanomaterials for Clean Energy Technologies (HRNCET). This was headed by Professor V. Dhayalan (coordinator of the HRNCET project from Norway HVL) and Professor P. Ravirajan (coordinator of the HRNCET project from the Sri Lanka University of Jaffna). Here all three faculties (Science, Engineering and Technology) Deans, Heads, Professors and Senior Lecturers participated. This is targeted to provide real knowledge including project development and implementation on clean energy technologies at the postgraduate level.

Opening Ceremony of the Mechanical, Manufacturing and Process Engineering Building

As a part of the MoU signed between India and Sri Lanka, construction and development of Mechanical Engineering section of the department of Interdisciplinary studies, Faculty of Engineering was carried out from September 2015 to May 2017. The building construction project worth of LKRs 256 million was done by Link Engineering. This building complex includes mechanical engineering laboratories, lecture theaters, computer aided design lab, administrative offices, lobby and court yard. Basically it has the comprehensive set up for conducting the Mechanical, Manufacturing and Process Engineering study program.

Field visit to the Eluvaitheevu Hybrid Power Plant

Students of 2013/E and 2014/E, who are specializing in the fields of Electrical & Electronic Engineering visited Eluvaitheevu hybrid power station on 30th of June 2017, which has the solar power generation, wind power generation as well as Diesel power generation in a small scale. This visit was arranged by Dr. V. Aravinthan under the course “Distribution on Automation and Smart Grid”. The visit covered the discussion on the problems and solutions in the distribution network design and the arrangement of the grid in detail. The process of the power generation, fault recovery and maintenance were explained by the staff at the power station. The real environment experience was a valuable opportunity for students to relate the theoretical knowledge in the real world application.
