Dr. Anburuvel presented at Jaffna Science Association

The Jaffna Science Association invites professionals to deliver technical talk for the development of the region as well as transfer of technology. Dr. A. Anburuvel, Head of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies Senior Lecturer of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invited to deliver a talk on transportation. The title of the talk is “ORIGIN – DESTINATION TRAFFIC DEMAND – IMPORTANCE, CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS”. The talk was very well done on 3rd May 2017 and it was chaired by Professor A. Atputharajah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

Mechanical, Manufacturing and process laboratory of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies is moving to its permanent building

The mechanical, manufacturing and process engineering section have been functioning at temporary place since start of the faculty in February 2014. In May 2017 this section got the permanent buildings completed. The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies have been allocated spaces in two places. One is at mechanical, manufacturing and process engineering building for mechanical section and a few rooms in the first floor of the administration block for mathematics and complementary studies. Head of the department’s room is also located in the administration block.

Professor Ratnam Vigneswaran assumed the duty of the Vice Chancellor, University of Jaffna

The new Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Professor Ratnam Vigneswaran has assumed his duties on 1st May 2017 at the Vice Chancellor’s office, University of Jaffna. He is the 8th Vice Chancellor of the University and takes over from former Vice Chancellor Professor Ms. Vasanthy Arasaratnam. Former Vice Chancellors, Council Members, Deans, Professors, Heads of the Departments and academic and non-academic staff members participated to this event.

Tamil Engineers Foundation donated 25 drawing boxes to the first year students

The Tamil Engineers Foundation, which is also called as Engineering Charity Fund – Australia, always helping the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna. The faculty increase the intake from 50 to 75 students. As a result the increased 25 students need to be empowered with additional drawing boxes. Therefore based on the request from the president of the Engineering Students Union to the President of the Tamil Engineering Foundation Eng. Thev Theiventhiram, this donation was initiated.

Faculty staff participated to the World Intellectual Property Day Seminar 2017

The Commercial Loa Development Program U.S. Department of Commerce of the U.S. Embassy in Colombo organized the world IP Day seminar at the Taj Samudra Hotel on 26th April 2017. This was organized in coordination with the University Grant Commission (UGC), National Intellectual Property Organization (NIPO), United State Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This was funded by Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs U.S. State Department and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Faculty staff participated to the ABB seminar on NEPLAN Power system Toolbox

The ABB Global Service Head Mr Jari Kaija, along with Mr Madhav Vemuri, Cluster Service Head had a seminar at University of Moratuwa on 26th April 2017. Here the ABB had a formal session to handover the license free software for the university students. This software was made available by ABB for universities under the name of “NEPLAN Power system Toolbox” with a server license for 25 concurrent users (ideal for lab batches) for a tenure of 6/12 months.

Drawing Instruments donation from the Tamil Engineers Foundation (Engineering Charity Fund Australia)

The Tamil Engineering Foundation is continuously helping the Faculty of Engineering by donating 25 Drawing Instruments to the Engineering Students Union (ESU). This event took place on 25th April 2017. Presently, ESU lend drawing instruments to the students when they need it for a small amount of rent. This rental plan was first proposed by the first batch and continues successfully for the second and third batch too. Many financially disadvantaged students benefitted by this instrument rental plan. As the ESU wanted to buy additional instruments to suffice the need of additional student intake, the donation was very timely and helpful with adding the capital. We wholeheartedly thank the donors Tamil Engineers Foundation for their invaluable assistance.

Faculty staff attended the special meeting of the IESL power sector committee to discuss the Draft National Energy Policy

A special meeting of the IESL Power Sector Committee was organized on 25th April 2017 to discuss the Draft National Energy Policy and Strategies of Sri Lanka. This was published by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA). SLSEA requests for public comments, inputs and observations to further improve the policy. It was asked to give professionals view for five minutes with prior written submission to this meeting. Professor A. Atputharajah, Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, participated to this meeting and gave his overall view.

Soft skill development program to the students

It has been notified as one of the common problem is lag of soft skill development. As a result six weeks of soft skill program is initiated at the Faculty board and applied to the students during their 12 weeks of break. Therefore among the 12 weeks break after the first semester, the students will be spending 6 weeks in the Faculty to follow these programs. These programs are different from each other and they are enjoyable and interesting to the students.
