Third year civil engineering students of university of Jaffna visited Victoria, Randenigala, Rantambe and Minipe Scheme under “CE 5040 – Hydraulic Engineering and design” subject in April 2017.
Nowadays power generation companies are moving to renewable energy based power generations. Even people have their own Solar photovoltaic (PV) cell based power generation system in homes. The new trend has come as the capital investment for these power generation has significantly reduced.
Three Mechanical and Process Engineering final year undergraduate students from the faculty got a golden opportunity to spend their 12 week special industrial training period as summer research interns at the (IITGN) Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The expenses in India was totally sponsored by the IITGN. The students were engaged in this research internship program from the 27th of March to the 16th of June 2017.
The faculty buildings major works were completed by the Sanken Pvt Ltd in March 2017. This was bench mark days of the Faculty of Engineering. As a result the cultural event of warming up by boiling the milk was carried out on 25th March 2017. For this event the Vice Chancellor Vasanthy Arasaratnam and all the staff, students and well-wishers were participated. This was good event, which usually carried out before the opening ceremony of the buildings. The faculty and the University thanks the UGC, the Ministry and the Treasury for their team work and support on completing the major works of the buildings. Further thanks goes to Sanken Pvt Ltd also for their hard work completing the buildings work on time. The faculty stands with the administration building together with another four buildings for four departments to serve the best for the region and thus the country.
National Construction of Association of Sri Lanka Northern Branch (NCASL NB) together with the World University Services Canada – Sri Lanka (WUSC-SL) launched their Strategic Plan at a Gathering organized on 25th March 2017.
Eng. V. Regunathan (BScEng in 1965 graduated University of Ceylon, Fellow of the IESL and Charted Engineer) was appointed as the external member of the Faculty Board from March 2017.
A discussion was organized by the RDHS Dr. Karthigeyan between the Kilinochchi hospital doctors and many other well-wishers at the Faculty of Engineering. This meeting was held, on 22nd March, to get views on the second phase development of the Kilinochchi hospital development proposal. The finalize proposal was planned to be submitted to the Ministry of National Planning by the RDHS. It was very fruitful meeting with Dr. Sathyamoorthy, Director of Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Eng. N. Suthaharan Deputy Director Department of Irrigation, Chief Engineer Department of Buildings Northern Province, and few Faculty senior staff members.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jaffna organized third workshop on Introduction to GIS using ArcGIS on 20th and 21st March 2017. Workshop covered basic features of ArcGIS and some advanced analysis sections. This workshop was funded by Water and Society (WaSo) Project of University of Jaffna.
The third and fourth days (17th and 18th March) of the program was dedicated to the school children activities. Many schools students visited to the Faculty of Engineering and participated to the competitions, technical discussions and award winning activities. Further the faculty students demonstrated number of real applications of what the school children learnt from Advance Level experiments. Thus gave an excellent opportunity for the school children to really feel and understand of what they learnt in A/L classes. The school activities are mostly targeted activities as service from the Faculty to the schools. This was very well appreciated by all the school students participated. As it was very demanding activity, it was decided to have the next Engineering week program from 22nd till 28th of January 2018.
The University of Jaffna and the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 14th March 2017 for the educational and research cooperation at Masters and PhD level. The agreement is taking part of five years of joint NORPART project. This focus on student and staff exchange within the fields of nanomaterial and clean energy technology. The main research area of the project will be new generations of solar cell technologies. The project also aims to establish a master program at the University of Jaffna in clean energy technologies and to facilitate joint supervision and dissemination. The project is funded by the Norwegian government and has a budget of 80 million rupees.
