Tamil Engineers Foundation, which is a registered Engineering Charity Fund organisation at Australia, have donated 25 drawing boxes to the Engineering Student Union. This donation is 121,725 rupees worth drawing instrument boxes for the additional intake of 25 students in the 4th batch of the undergraduate student. The faculty took 3rd batch with 50 students’ intake and 4th batch with 75 students’ intake. Normally this is done by the alumni association in other Universities. This is to help the undergraduate students to provide equal opportunity, where they can perform the best in their studies.
The Government Agent of the Jaffna District, invited Dr. A. Anburuvel to participate the Strategic Cities Development Project Meetings to get his advice as expert on transportation. It was planned to conduct number of discussions from March 2017. It has been decided to study the Jaffna integrated multi model transport system to identify and stream line to the traffic and transport management towards future development in city area. It is targeted to establish the development plan throughout till 2050. It is an excellent initiative by the Government Agent of the Jaffna District to integrate the experts’ advices for the long term future plan. The faculty is happy to help in all means on helping to develop the strategic cities development plan for the sustainable solutions for problems in the cities, around this region, with long term focus. This will help to move forward with sustainable development of the country at large scale.
The Stakeholder consultation on vertical building complex related to the 2017 budget proposal was held on 14th and 21st of March 2017 at the Chief Minister’s secretariat in Kaithadi, Jaffna. The discussion was to build a vertical building complex for commercial and recreational purpose. Eng. M. Vignarajah participated both meetings on the above title. During the meeting it was emphasized that a city development plan for the next 25 years, considering space management, traffic planning, utility managements, waste management etc. Also it was discussed that without demolishing the existing buildings, it is advisable to refurbish with modern architecture which manifest the local landscape. It was a golden opportunity for the Faculty to provide the technical advice for the better development.
Mr. D.S. Sampath attended short course on Open-Source GIS and Applications – QGIS (6 Day Training program) from 6th March – 11th March 2017 at PGIS, University of Peradeniya. This was fully residential program and it covered mainly QGIS and other open source GIS packages. Workshop organized by Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jaffna has organized the second workshop on Introduction to GIS using ArcGIS on 20th and 21st February 2017. Workshop covered basic features of ArcGIS and some advanced analysis sections. This workshop was funded by Water and Society (WaSo) Project of University of Jaffna.
The Engineering Week also help the community in many different ways. There were always a medical camp organized with the help of medical doctors. The Kilinochchi hospital is always helping on this regards.
Indoor games activities were conducted throughout the Engineering Week program. It was mostly held from 6:30pm till 10:00pm. Number of games were played among all the students, between staff and student, mixture of staff and students. It was very well organized to make it in parallel operation to accommodate many activities. The faculty congratulate all students for their effective and efficient way of conducting these activities.
The cricket tournament organized by Young Members’ Section for the IESL Members and University Students was held on Saturday, 18th February 2017 successfully at the Thurstan grounds. Twenty two (22) teams competed representing Sectional committees, Provincial chapters & Universities. Matches were conducted under two categories namely, ‘Members Category’ & ‘University Category’.
Students from Faculty of Engineering of the University participated to this tournament with the team name of University of Jaffna. The team was organized by the IESL YMS University of Jaffna chapter. The faculty also thank the IESL for organizing very interactive event.
The second day program on sports is also started on 16th February afternoon. It was so energetic sports among the students. Very well coordinated all batch of students and the play was fantastic. This created excellent interaction between students, also with the staff members. This was started from 3:00pm and went up to 6:30pm.
