Engineering week is an annual event of the Faculty. It has number of activities including sports, talent shows, exhibitions, laboratory demonstration to school children and many social activities. The E-week 2017 started on 15th February with a cricket match between students, staff including academics and non-academics. It covers all the members in the faculty. It is one of the best event where the whole faculty come to the highly interactive sessions. It was very interesting cricket tournament activities started from 15th late afternoon onwards.

D. S. Sampath attended workshop on Introduction to GIS Using ArcGIS (5 days training course) from 13th Feb – 17th Feb 2017 at GIS Solutions (Pvt) LTD, 370, Galle Road, Colombo 3. Workshop was organized by GIS solutions (Pvt.) Ltd. Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jaffna purchased 31 license of ArcGIS software from GIS solutions (Pvt.) Ltd. This training program also included in the same package. This workshop targeted to cover basic principles and some advanced analysis using ArcGIS software.

A full day workshop was conducted to the students using Power System CAD program. This is to give opportunity to the students on visualizing their theoretical knowledge through simulation package. This workshop was organized by the student societies. The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Society organized this workshop on 12th February full day. IT was selected on a weekend to give opportunity to all batch of interested students. Especially this was targeted to third year and final year students.

The “IESL Day” event for the year of 2017, which is the first event of its kind in Sri Lanka, was organized and successfully conducted on 11th February, 2017. The event was started from 8am and finished at 4pm at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering. The IESL president Eng. Mr. Jayalal Meegoda graced the event with his presence as Chief Guest. The IESL Vadakin Chapter President Eng. Mr. Barathitasan, the IESL YMS President Eng. Mr. Dayan Herath and few Engineers working in industries and organizations in Northern Province took part in the technical session. The Dean of the faculty, Head of Departments and students from all 4 departments participated in the event.

The parent IESL has approved to form a Kilinochchi District Centre on the request of IESL Vadakkin (Northern) Chapter. Therefore it has been decided to inaugurate Killinochchi District center, which will serve members of Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts. The inauguration was held on 10th February 2017 (Friday) from 6.00pm onwards at the Friends Inn hotel. The event was chaired by Eng.T.Barathithasan, Chairman of the Vadakkin Chapter. Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, the President of the IESL, blessed the event as Chief Guest while Prof. (Eng.) A. Atputharajah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, supported as Guest of Honor in this event. Fellows, Members, Associate Members, Faculty Academic Staff and Students participated to this event. This event was coordinated and conducted by the IESL Vadakkin (Northern) Chapter. The chairman Eng.T.Barathithasan and executive committee of the IESL Vadakkin (Northern) Chapter was thanked for conducting this successful event with the participation of more than 40 members.

Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Mr. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya declared open Sri Lanka’s first hybrid power plant in Eluvathivu Island, Jaffna on 10th February 2017. Together with the honorable minister, Deputy Minister Mr. Ajith P. Perera, higher rank officers from the CEB and Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority and Professor Atputharajah from Faculty of Engineering were attended. Eng. D.K.P.U. Gunathilake, Deputy General Manager (North) Ceylon Electricity Board together with his team of Engineers organized this event very successfully.

D. S. Sampath attended Prof. (Eng.) R. H. Paul 36th Memorial Oration on 9th Feb 2017 at Wimalasurendra Auditorium, Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, Colombo. This was organized by Electrical and Electronic Engineering Sectional Committee of IESL. Lecture was delivered on the topic of ‘Enabling Power systems of the future” by Eng. (Prof) Kithsiri M Liyanage, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya.

D. S. Sampath attended One day workshop on the use of GPS and Google Earth tools in research 9th Feb 2017 at postgraduate institute of Agriculture (Colombo branch), Sri Lanka foundation, Colombo. Workshop organized by board of study in soil science, Postgraduate institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. This workshop targeted field experience in how to handle GPS and laboratory experiments on Google earth tools in research.

This was held at seminar room of the National Water Supply Drainage Board at Jaffna on 7th February 2017. Eng Shavindranath Fernanado, Past President of the IESL, and Eng K.P.I.U. Dharmapala, Council Member of the IESL, enlighten the event as resource persons. This was organized by Northern (Vadakkin) Chapter of IESL.

Dr. (Eng) SS. Sivakumar, Head Civil Chaired the meeting. Eng. M. Vignarajah (Senior Lecturer, Accreditation Manager), Dr. N. Sathiparan (Senior Lecturer, IQAC member), Ms. L. Thaksijini (Lecturer, A/Secretary ICC), Eng. P. Thivaharan (CE-Buildings), Eng. K. Muraleetharan EE Buildings), Eng. N. Suthaharan (DD-Irrigation), Eng. S. Suventhan (DE-NWSNB), Eng. S. Pushparaja (CE-CECB), Eng. V. Jegananthan (CE-RDD), Eng. Rajagobu (DD-Irrigation) attended the meeting. The meeting was held on 7th February 2017 at the Board room of this Faculty of Engineering. The below three presentations was discussed as introduction to the Faculty of Engineering and explain the requirement of the ICC meeting. It was also discussed that the industry–department collaboration in the future.
