An agreement was reached on 17th June 2014 between the University of Jaffna and Kelani Cables for a training program that would involve training electrical technicians, with input from the University of Jaffna. This will be done through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering at Kilinochchi. The MoU signed this week would initiate training of young school leavers from the North who could develop their skills, subject to aptitude for such work. Further the agreement includes getting the industrial support to provide industrial training, industrial projects to embed the students education with the industrial nature.
Establishing Students’ Society
The founder students’ society was established on 16th June 2014 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna. The committee members of the society were selected by unanimously by the students. Dr. T. Thiruvaran is nominated as Senior Treasurer for the society. Commencing the Construction Work of the Faculty Building Complex
The construction work of the Faculty of Engineering buildings was started on a remarkable day of the commencing of the Faculty of Agriculture at their permanent buildings at Kilinochchi premises of the University of Jaffna. Electronic dice as an Electronic Souvenir for the First Batch of Engineering Students
Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah, Head of School of Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales in Australia has donated components and the associated circuit diagram to make an electronic dice as an Electronic Souvenir for the first batch of Engineering students at the University of Jaffna. Each student was given the components and the circuit diagram and the students are expected to solder the components according to the diagram to produce an electronic dice and when the students successfully solder it that will be their souvenir. Students were very much interested in preparing their surprised souvenirs. This is not only a memorable souvenir but also it develops practical skills while motivating the students. This event was held during 1st week of June 2014.
Establishing of Engineering Studentship
This scheme is planned to keep the fund in the fixed deposit and release the interest to provide studentship. Few well-wishers have already donated money to establish this engineering studentship. Mr. Sunith Fernando (300,000 rupees), ” Nalan Virumbi ” (400,000 rupees) and Mr. Noel Selvanayagam (1,200,000 rupees) have helped the faculty by donating the money to establish this studentship. Establishment of Studentship Program for the Poor Student in a Batch
A cash of 4000 Sri Lankan Rupees per month will be given to the one poor student per batch. This studentship is sponsored by Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah. The Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah’s studentship will be giving the financial support for one poor student in each batch. This was established in May 2014.
Temporary Guest House to the Kilinochchi premises
Temporary arrangement was made by hiring a house, closer to the A9 road at Kilinochchi town, to use as the Guest House of the Kilinochchi premises of the University of Jaffna. Outstanding Performance Cash Award for Each Semester
Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah award has been established for the student, who obtains the outstanding performance in each semester. Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah, Head of School of Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales in Australia, will be awarding cash award of 4000 Sri Lankan Rupees per month to the student, who get the best performance in a semester. This award will be given to one student in all eight semesters based on the students’ performance in the previous semester exams. The students are geared to get this award from May 2014.
Industrial Support to Students of the Faculty of Engineering
Holcim Lanka donated 39 sets of drawing tool kits, on 8th May 2014, to the first batch of engineering students enrolled at the Jaffna University as a part of its drive to support training and education. In order to successfully complete their education the students require box of drawing tools comprising an instrument box, scale, set square, drawing clips and erasing shield and it is this set of instruments that Holcim Lanka has donated to the University. Faculty Board and its growth
The faculty board successfully completing its 5th month of it operations by the April 2014. The faculty board is advised by three external members of (i) Professor K. Kandasamy, Senior Professor from the Faculty of Science, University of Jaffna, (ii) Dr. Nihal Somaratne, Senior academic staff member from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya and (iii) Eng. D.K.P.U. Gunathilake, Deputy General Manager, Northern Province, Ceylon Electricity Board. The faculty has grown up with four PhD holders and three lecturers. The senior staff members completed their postgraduate studies in United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, India and Sri Lanka.
