Drop-in-health centre and counselling station have started operations on 7th October. Dr. P. Karthikeyan, RDHS Kilinochchi and his crew worked hard to bring this centre in operation within a short period of time. Deputy registrar and student counsellors of the Faculty of Engineering took part in initiatives to get the centre run on regular basis. Presently, Dr. Menaka from Kilinochchi district hospital visits the Kilinochchi premises voluntarily to provide medical assistance. The centre will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week from 2 to 3 p.m. This is a noteworthy achievement at the Kilinochchi premises, University of Jaffna, to cater health needs of all students, staff of the Kilinochchi premises. The medical doctors have promised to provide their continuous support until, Kilinochchi premises gets a designated medical officer.
Dr. Mathavan is on visiting appointment at the Faculty
Senthan Mathavan is lecturing the engineering undergraduates during his visiting appointment at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna from 7th October for a period of a month.
S.Mathavan received the BScEng degree specialized in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2005. He topped the batch obtaining GPA 4.0 out of 4.0. From 2005 to 2006, he was an Assistant Lecturer attached to the Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Peradeniya. He obtained the PhD degree in Mechatronics from Loughborough University in the UK, in 2009. Continue reading
First boys-hostel for the Kilinochchi Premises of the University of Jaffna
The first male hostel, located within Kilinochchi premises University of Jaffna, has been rehabilitated and students were given accommodation on 5th October 2014. Presently, first year students from Faculties of Agriculture and Engineering are occupying the hostel. There are two students in each room, have been provided with beds, study tables, chairs. Mini cooperative shop to enhance common facilities to the students and staff
On the request of university community of Kilinochchi premises, Karaichchi South Co-operative society has opened a mini co-op at the Kilinochchi premises to cater the needs of students and staff. The Opening ceremony was held on 26th September 2014. Staff & Students of Faculties of Agriculture and Engineering participated in the ceremony.
Research Grant to Faculty of Engineering – Development of Electromagnetic Picking System for Weaving Loom
Development of Electromagnetic Picking System for Weaving Loom projects is carried out by Mr. Kamalaruban, Miss. K. Hamsathvanie and Ms. S. Selvalogini from the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. The research is selected among the competitive applications and the funding is received from University research grant, which commenced from September 2014. Considering the main scope of this research project, in weaving industry, the production has always been relied on picking speed, so the development of the picking system with optimum speed is vital to increase the economical production. Therefore, this study will open a new direction for small scale entrepreneurs while introducing industry base research to the Faculty.
Dr. S. Sivasegaram (former Senior Professor, University of Peradeniya) is visiting the faculty
Dr. S. Sivasegaram, who served as Senior Professor at the University of Peradeniya, is now doing visiting lectures in the Faculty. He is teaching Thermodynamics to the students from 12th September 2014. He graduated from the University of Ceylon with BScEng with First Class honours in 1964, completed his Diploma at Imperial College and obtained his MSc with Distinction from the University of London in 1967. All staff members of the Faculty had a discussion with IESL Accreditation consultant on 18th of August at the IESL head office in Colombo. Good interactive discussions were conducted with the consultant Prof. Noel Fernando. It was very good to know the IESL accreditation requirements, which according to the Washington Accord. Seminar on “Hypotheses of cultivating fresh water in the Jaffna Lagoons, is a challenge for Engineers and Environmentalists”.
This awareness research presentation was jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna, Institute of Engineers of Northern Provincial Centre, Jaffna Managers Forum and Jaffna Science Association Section B. It was held at the Faculty of Engineering on 11th August 2014. This presentation was based the research carried out by Eng. S. Kuganesan from Norway under Dr. S.S. Sivakumar’s supervision. This event was very successful with the participation of 94 participants including Secretary, former GA, Senior Academics, Directors and Engineers.
First Batch Completed their First Semester
The first batch of engineering students has successfully completed the first semester of their education on 9th August 2014. This was a challenging semester conducted while adding number of facilities to the Faculty. However, this has added excellent experience with challenges, motivation and enthusiasm to the student.
