Special guest lecture on “Project Governance and Management in Construction”

Problem Brief:This program was organized by the National Construction Association of Sri Lanka (NCASL) North Chapter with collaboration of Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna together with the World University Services Canada Sri Lanka regional office. The Special guest lecture session was conducted on “Project Governance and Management in construction industry. This was conducted at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering on 22nd September 2017. Around 60 participants attended this event from the Private and government sectors.

The session cover wider spectrum of participants from all 5 districts from Vavuniya, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Jaffna. The same day a book was published on the same subject and handed over to the NCAL/N and IESL Northern Province Chapter.

Outcome of the event:

  1. Improved key stakeholder’s knowledge on the subject of project governance and management in construction industry.

  2. Improved network with the academic institutions and private sector to sort-out construction related key issues and challenges experienced in the region.

  3. Improved their recognitions among stakeholder as regional Apex in the construction industry.

  4. Developed network with Engineering Faculty, University of Jaffna, and NCASL/N and WUSC SL.

Professor Kasivisvanathan Chelvakumar delivered a talk on entrepreneurship to the Faculty Students

Dr. Kasivisvanathan Chelvakumar appointed to the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies as visiting professor during September 2017. He is teaching to the Mechanical Engineering students. He also visited here already in three times in the past and continuously encouraging the students with. His vast knowledge and experience immensely contributed to the development of the mechanical engineering discipline while students were enjoying his teaching in the past. He created number of connections to the Faculty for future collaborations. His timely assistance is very much appreciated.

Dr. Kasivisvanathan Chelvakumar graduated with B.Sc Eng degree with first class honors from the University of Peradeniya in 1980. He completed his M.Sc Eng and PhD at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences at California Institute of Technology with major specialization in Civil Engineering and Mechanical ENgineering and minor specialization in Aeronautical Engineering in 1981 and 1985, respectively. He obtained a number of awards Valedictorian; Irvine Company Award for highest GPA; Beta Gamma Sigma; Dean’s Scholar; Outstanding Service Award at University of California, Irvine, Ananda Amarasinghe Award for graduating first in the country at the University of Peradeniya. He also obtained MBA from University of California Irvine in 2005. He had excellent professional experience in industries and held academic positions as adjunct professor at California State University from 1983 to 2001, Tenure-track assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University from 1985 to 1989. Currently he is a visiting professor at the Department Mechanical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad. Gujarat, Inida.

3D Printer Training Prosthetics – Organized by MyCorps and Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Faculty of Engineering

Volunteers from MyCorps, an international Youth Volunteer Program under Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia, together with Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna organized a 3D Printer Prosthetics Training with the main aim to educate the participants on 3D Printer specifically on its usage in producing prosthetic and tools that will help improving life of disabled people.

MyCorps South Asia is an International Youth Volunteer Program under Ministry of Youth and Sports, Malaysia that aims to serve and provide humanitarian assistance in terms of sustainable projects in the areas of education, medical, social and economic development to those who are in needs towards the betterment of community in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Previously MyCorps had successfully delivered projects in Cambodia, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

The training was conducted from 25th to 29th September 2017 at the Mechanical Manufacturing and Process Engineering Building, Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. There were 16 participants from various institutions such as:

  • Jaffna Jaipur Center for Disability Rehabilitation
  • Olirum Valvu, Puthukudiyiruppu
  • Prosthetic Center, Kilinochchi
  • Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna
  • Mayzone College

The training provided a comprehensive insight on 3D printer and its usage in prosthetic. Two trainers from Malaysia did the training for the participants. During the training, couple of amputees were invited and their limbs were produced using 3D printer.

Students and Staff participated to the 28th International Symposium on Transport Phenomena

The three mechanical engineering students, Mr. S. Nidershan, Ms. W. A. Dinusha and Mr. B. G. D. H. Bopitiya along with staff member Ms. H. Krishnarajah attended the 28th International Symposium on Transport Phenomena held from 22nd – 24th September 2017 at University of Peradeniya, Kandy, Sri Lanka. They presented their research work on the title “Design of a control system to optimize power consumption in air conditioners to satisfy human thermal comfort” at this conference. This research work is study from their undergraduate at Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna.

Practical workshop on Laboratory Equipment at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Laboratory equipment (pvt) ltd is the TERCO equipment provider. They have organized a workshop for Electronic Engineering Staff at the Faculty of Engineering. Technology faculty staff also got opportunity to participate this workshop. Lecturers, Instructors, Lab attendant and Technical Officers of Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, University of Jaffna had participated this workshop. Per Hanson Marketing Manager from TERCO conducted this workshop on 20th September 2017.

Per Hanson conducted lots of laboratory experiments such as synchronization experiment, experiment related to synchronous machines and Wind Mill System. Staff from department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering got a great opportunity to involve in laboratory experiments. This will help to do experiment for EC5040 Electric machines and EC9120 Advanced Machines and Drives. This workshop will also help to do number of students projects. Per Hanson solved our practical issues and suggest some project works for the students.

Training on laboratory equipment by TERCO

TERCO is a worldwide provider of technical equipment for education. They have organized a workshop at South Eastern Electrical & Electronics Engineering Staff together with the Jaffna University Electrical & Electronic Engineering Staff. Per Hanson Marketing Manager from TERCO had visited to conduct this workshop. This was held on 18th and 19th of September 2017. Two members (Miss. S. Vinothine and Mr. S. Satheesh) from the Department participated to this workshop.

This is a very great opportunity to our staff to know about how to use the equipment in our practical session. Most of equipment is in our laboratory also. Per Hanson conduct some practical and described about the operation of equipment. We had a great opportunity to do experiments. In the workshop we got a chance to identify what are the equipment are needed to our department in future. Per Hanson solved our problems and gave some suggestions for better experiment. We got chance to meet chairman of Laboratory equipment pvt ltd which has rights to sale TERCO equipment.

Second year Civil Engineering students visited irrigation systems in Northern Province

Second year civil engineering students of university of Jaffna visited irrigation systems in Northern Province under “CE 4030 – Engineering Hydrology” subject on 16th September 2017. They have visited Wishwamadu, Kalmadu and Iranamadu irrigation schemes and their canal network. Sampath organized the field visit and guided them during filed visit.

They have studied about reservoirs and related structures, Dam types, spillway types, canal structures, cross drainage structures and irrigation structures during the field visit.

Students have seen regulators, drop structures, canal spills, canal transitions (canal contraction and canal expansions), uniform cross section canal, variable cross section canals, LB and RB main canals, D- canals, F- Canals, B canals, trapezoidal and rectangular channel, diversion canal, concrete lining canal and earth canals, spill canals, bathing steps, retaining wall for canal bank protection (Cantilever, gabion and gravity walls), spill ways (Radial gates, natural and Ogee type spill), stilling basins, hydraulic jumps, sluice towers, cross drainage structures, course ways and many more.

They have seen command areas of each reservoirs (paddy fields) and catchment areas of the reservoirs. They have seen dam widening and raising activities at Iranamadu reservoir.

Other than this they have visited DryAru kulam and Kanagambikai kulam too.

Alumni of Peradeniya (E 63-67 batch) visited to the Faculty and deliver a talk to the Faculty Students

A group of professional visitors, who are alumni of Peradeniya (E 63-67 batch), visited to the faculty on 15th September 2017. This group includes Dr. A.S. Rajendran, Eng. R.A.J. Amirthanayakam, Eng. John Fernando and Eng. Vamadevan. It was a good discussion with the Dean, Heads of the Departments and staff members for about an hour and also they delivered about an hour and half talk to the students. The students were very well motivated by their talk and it was interesting with follow up interactions with the students after the talk too.
