The foundation stone is laid for the staff quarters of the Kilinochchi premises on 17th April 2017. This was done at the 400 acres land area, where the staff quarters also allocated as per in the master plan of the Kilinochchi premises. Academic staff and non-academic staff of all three faculties were attended with the Vice Chancellor Professor Vasanthy Arasaratnam. The three faculties of Engineering, Agriculture and Technology will get this facilities to support the academic staff. This is with the total cost of 25 million rupees and expected to complete four staff quarters each with two stories individual houses. Dr. Kaneswaran, Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, represented the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering to this event. Prof Mrs. Thushyanthy Mikunthan, Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Professor Srisatkunarajah, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Technology were participated the event with all other Deans of the other Faculties of Science, Arts and Graduate Studies.
Roof top solar pilot power plant demonstration and handing over event
The roof top solar pilot power plant installed at the Faculty of Engineering in September 2016. This was left on running by inaugurating its operation from October 2016. Then the operation was monitored and it was showing excellent operations as expected. The Kilinochchi is already known as excellent operation for solar power plant. This was proven by the roof-top-solar power plant at the Faculty of Engineering. The roof top pilot plant contains 55kW of String Inverter System and 5kW of Micro Inverter System.
Department of Computer Engineering Staff participated Quality Engineering Awareness Session by SLASSCOM
SLASSCOM invited university lecturers for a “Quality Engineering Awareness Session” which was held on 6th April 2017 at Colombo. Three staff members from the Department of Computer Engineering participated the event: (i) Dr. A. Kaneswaran, Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, (ii) Dr. M. Siyamalan, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Engineering, (iii) Ms. J. Segar, Lecturer (Probationary), Department of Computer Engineering.

Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka (BUSL), Anuradhapura organized a 2 day workshop on Introduction to GIS using ArcGIS on 6th and 7th April 2017. Ven. Vice Chancellor of BUSL invited Mr. Saliya Sampath to conduct this workshop as a resource person.

Establishment of Renewable Energy Park at the Faculty of Engineering
Nowadays power generation companies are moving to renewable energy based power generations. Even people have their own Solar photovoltaic (PV) cell based power generation system in homes. The new trend has come as the capital investment for these power generation has significantly reduced.
Internship at IITGN for Mechanical and Process Engineering Students
Three Mechanical and Process Engineering final year undergraduate students from the faculty got a golden opportunity to spend their 12 week special industrial training period as summer research interns at the (IITGN) Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The expenses in India was totally sponsored by the IITGN. The students were engaged in this research internship program from the 27th of March to the 16th of June 2017.
Warming up ceremony at the Faculty of Engineering
The faculty buildings major works were completed by the Sanken Pvt Ltd in March 2017. This was bench mark days of the Faculty of Engineering. As a result the cultural event of warming up by boiling the milk was carried out on 25th March 2017. For this event the Vice Chancellor Vasanthy Arasaratnam and all the staff, students and well-wishers were participated. This was good event, which usually carried out before the opening ceremony of the buildings. The faculty and the University thanks the UGC, the Ministry and the Treasury for their team work and support on completing the major works of the buildings. Further thanks goes to Sanken Pvt Ltd also for their hard work completing the buildings work on time. The faculty stands with the administration building together with another four buildings for four departments to serve the best for the region and thus the country.
