D. S. Sampath attended Prof. (Eng.) R. H. Paul 36th Memorial Oration on 9th Feb 2017 at Wimalasurendra Auditorium, Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, Colombo. This was organized by Electrical and Electronic Engineering Sectional Committee of IESL. Lecture was delivered on the topic of ‘Enabling Power systems of the future” by Eng. (Prof) Kithsiri M Liyanage, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya.
D. S. Sampath attended One day workshop on the use of GPS and Google Earth tools in research 9th Feb 2017 at postgraduate institute of Agriculture (Colombo branch), Sri Lanka foundation, Colombo. Workshop organized by board of study in soil science, Postgraduate institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. This workshop targeted field experience in how to handle GPS and laboratory experiments on Google earth tools in research.
Dr. Anburuvel, Dr. Ketheesan and Mr. D. S. Sampath attended Professional Review Workshop for Associate Members. This was held at seminar room of the National Water Supply Drainage Board at Jaffna on 7th February 2017. Eng Shavindranath Fernanado, Past President of the IESL, and Eng K.P.I.U. Dharmapala, Council Member of the IESL, enlighten the event as resource persons. This was organized by Northern (Vadakkin) Chapter of IESL.
Dr. (Eng) SS. Sivakumar, Head Civil Chaired the meeting. Eng. M. Vignarajah (Senior Lecturer, Accreditation Manager), Dr. N. Sathiparan (Senior Lecturer, IQAC member), Ms. L. Thaksijini (Lecturer, A/Secretary ICC), Eng. P. Thivaharan (CE-Buildings), Eng. K. Muraleetharan EE Buildings), Eng. N. Suthaharan (DD-Irrigation), Eng. S. Suventhan (DE-NWSNB), Eng. S. Pushparaja (CE-CECB), Eng. V. Jegananthan (CE-RDD), Eng. Rajagobu (DD-Irrigation) attended the meeting. The meeting was held on 7th February 2017 at the Board room of this Faculty of Engineering. The below three presentations was discussed as introduction to the Faculty of Engineering and explain the requirement of the ICC meeting. It was also discussed that the industry–department collaboration in the future.
The talent show is an annual students’ event of the Faculty of Engineering. This was organized by every batch and during the year 2017, the third batch was organizing this talent show. This was held on 6th February 2017. It was very interesting fun while the students have excellent opportunity show their talents. It bring so many talents of the students and very enjoyable event of the Faculty. Here all the academic and non-academic staff, students, sponsors and many well-wishers attend to this event. The faculty congratulated the students showed their talents at the excellent entertaining evening.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Services, Animal Husbandry, Irrigation, Water Supply, Food Supply and Distribution, Environment and Co-operative Development – Northern Province has decided to develop a water policy for sustainable management of water resources in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. As a result, a Water Resource Development Colloquium was organized by the Ministry from 28th to 30th January 2017. This is to obtain novel ideas and concerns of all stakeholders, including professionals and academics. It was focused to create a platform for constructive discussion to initiate drafting a policy document. Dean, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Head of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and few other staff members attended this conference from the Faculty of Engineering. Dr. (Eng) S.S. Sivakumar, Head Civil Engineering also delivered a presentation titled on “Quality issues to be addressed through water resources policy” during the first session of the event.
The following students have been awarded Prof. Eliathamby Ambikairajah award for their best performance in semester exams at the special faculty board held on 20th September 2017. The selected students were excited about the award and expressed their sincere gratitude to Prof. Eliathamby Ambikairajah. They further said that such awards motivate them to excel in their studies.
Mr Ijzermans, team leader DR mission, Eng G.V. Ratnasara, MCB consultant, Eng S.P.P. Gamage, MCB consultant, Eng V. Preamkumar, Director Irrigation, Eng N. Suthaharan Deputy Director Irrigation and Sarvananthan Sarvaraja, IE Jaffna, were visited to the faculty of engineering university of Jaffna. This meeting was held at the Department of Civil Engineering on 25th January 2017. During this visit, the delegates had a discussion about the Jaffna Lagoon projects (River for Jaffna Project) with Dr. (Eng.) S.S. Sivakumar, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering.
Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jaffna organized a successful workshop on Introduction to GIS using ArcGIS on 16th and 17th of January 2017. Workshop covered basic features of ArcGIS and some analysis. This workshop was funded by Water and Society (WaSo) Project of University of Jaffna.
IESL workshop on Curriculum Mapping and Aligning Assessments was held on 16th January 2017 at IESL, Sri Lanka. This is specially done for Civil Engineering, therefore following academic staff of Department of Civil Engineering was participated in this workshop on behalf of faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna: (i) Eng. K.M. Vignarajah, (ii) Dr. N. Sathiparan, (iii) Dr. D.N. Subramaniam, (iv) Dr. B. Ketheesan and (v) Miss. T. Logeswaran. Prof. Julia Lamborn from Australia was the resource person for the workshop and around 50 academics from universities and institutions providing 4 year engineering degree programmes in Sri Lanka participated. President of IESL, Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda welcomed the participants to the workshop.
