Field trip to first hybrid renewable-diesel power plant of Sri Lanka at Eluvathivu, Jaffna

Sri Lanka’s first hybrid power plant was developed in Eluvathivu Island, Jaffna. This plant is with a capacity of 60 KW will generate electricity using wind power, solar power, and diesel. It has been built with the financial assistance rendered by the Asian Development Bank and the Ceylon Electricity Board aiming the promotion of green energy at a cost of Rs. 187 million. One unit generated by this power plant will cost about Rs. 9.14.

Poster Presentation of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering Students

A poster presentation was organized by the Students of the Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Computer Engineering Students. This is to demonstrate the projects carried out by the students their undergraduate studies. This was held on 20th December. This poster presentation was seen through by the Department staff, other departments’ staff and visitors from USA and Canada of Professor Kumar Venayagamoorthy, Dr. Thrishantha Nanayakkara, Professor Kiruba S Haran, Professor Visvakumar Aravinthan and Industrial engineers. Workshop on “Challenges and opportunities for an emerging Engineering program”

A three-day workshop was organized on 19th December 2016 by the electrical and electronic engineering department. The foreign experts are attracted by the ICIAFS (2016 EEE International Conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability) Conference held at Galle. Soon after the conference we invited few of those experts and organized the workshop and conducted technical talks, career guidance, curriculum revision and guest lectures.

Faculty students participated to the startup weekend Vanni program and obtained first three prizes

The Startup Weekend Vanni was held at faculty of Engineering from 16th to 18th December 2016. This is the third such event in Sri Lanka. Startup Weekend is a global phenomenon – 54 hours of fast and furious prototype development through to exploring potential markets and pitching. It’s an opportunity to the graduates/students to present their startup ideas and polish up the ideas as working prototype which get polished by many industry experts during the event. Faculty staff participated to the International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE)

The International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE) was jointly organized by WaSo was held in Kandy from 16th to 18th December 2016. Dr. (Eng) S S Sivakumar, Head Civil Engineering and coordinator of WaSo-Asia UoJ project and one of the organizing committee member of WaSo-ICSBE, participated the conference together with Dr Abirami Sivaruban from Faculty of Science. Dr. Sivakumar was chairing one of the session of this international conference. Three of the Jaffna university staff presented research papers with the assistance of WaSo project.

Training Workshop on “METHODS IN WATER QUALITY TESTING”

Mr. D.S. Sampath (Lecturer from Engineering), Mr. N. Thasaradan (Lecturer from Science) attended training workshop on “METHODS IN WATER QUALITY TESTING” on 15th and 16th of December 2016. This was held at Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya. Workshop was jointly organized by Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL) and Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya. WaSo Asia project of University of Jaffna sponsored above two participants from the University of Jaffna. Prof. C.B. Dissanayake, Prof. Rohana Chandrajith, Prof. Rohan Weerasooriya, Dr. Achala Herath and Mr. Saranga Diyabalanage were the resource persons of this workshop.

WaSo – Asia Annual Planning Meeting

WaSo Asia planning meeting was held during 13th – 15th December 2016 at Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jaffna. Prof. Harsha Rathnaweera, Prof. Tore Saetersdal, Dr. Berit Hauger Lindstad, Dr. Olfa Khelifi EP Arfaoui, and Mr. Rune Romes represent the Norwegian partners. Prof. MD Mafizur Rahman and Miss Fahmida Akhter attended from Bangladesh and Dr. Heng Sokchhay and Dr. Doung Ratha represent the Cambodia. Prof. Weerakoon and five others attended from University of Peradeniya. Dr. A. Atputharajah, Dean/Engineering also attended the meeting. Dr. S.S. Sivakumar, Coordinator, WaSo Asia project of University of Jaffna, Eng. Saliya Sampath and Miss Janaki Kanagarajah, project assistants WaSo Asia project of University of Jaffna organized the meeting. Eng. Saliya Sampath was the Coordinator of WaSo Asia planning Meeting. Participants went to Habarana for village safari on 15th Dec 2016 after the meeting. Then they proceed to Kandy to attend rest of the meeting with African partners and to participate ICSBE international conference.

Movie night organized by the Faculty students

The faculty students (Engineering Students Union) organized the movie night event on 7th December 2016 night. All the students and some staff were participated by watching the movie. With the possible facility, the students creating entertainment events. This was done at the Engineering Drawing room with multimedia projector facility. The faculty new administrative building, which is very closer to the completion stage, will have enough auditorium facility for students’ entertainment events.
