Dr. Sivakumar and Sampath attended WaSo Africa and Asia annual meeting from 7th January to 11th January 2016 at Siem Reap, Cambodia. Dr. Lorani Rajasooriya, Department of Geography, University of Jaffna also attended for the meeting as resource person. Sivakumar and Mr. Saliya Sampath attended and presented their research papers with their research students on 8th International Perspective on Water Resources and the Environment Conference (IPWE 2016), held at Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo, from 4th to 6th January 2016 organizing by American Society of Civil Engineers /Environmental and Water Resources Institute (ASCE-EWRI). Professor EliathambyAmbikairajah, Head of School of Electrical Engineering &Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales in Australia,donated embedded systems design kits for the first batch students. He also donated Electronic Dice Souvenir project for the first and second batch ofengineering students of Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. Thisproject was very well appreciated by the first and second batch students.
Ms. P. Jeyananthan and Ms. J. Segar joined department of Computer Engineering as lecturer (probationary) from 1st of January 2016. This department had only one academic member until both of them have joined the department. Ms. T. Logeswaran also joined department of Civil Engineering as lecturer (probationary) on same day.
Dr. R. Logen Logendran is a Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and Graduate Program Chair in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, USA. Prof was appointed to the Faculty of Engineering as a visiting professor from 4th July for five weeks to serve the faculty on teaching subjects for Mechanical Engineering students and at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. His lectures were very well attended by the students and his mentoring to the staff members were excellent. During his stay here he also helped to revise the curriculum on the Mechanical Engineering subjects. The Department and the Faculty thanks his services, which helped specially at the initial stage of the Faculty development.
The HETC (Higher Education for Twenty-first Century) organized a series of workshops and seminars in 2015 to update the Quality Enhancement (QE) process for introducing the establishment of the Internal Quality Enhancement Cell (IQEC). After the successful completion of workshops the programmed review manual was launched to all Universities on 31st December 2015. Dr. P. Kathirgamanathan attended this book launching ceremony as the chairman of the Quality Enhancement Cell of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna.
Dr. Wijitha Senadeera from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia and his research team made a visit to the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna in December 2015. The Faculty staff members had a fruitful discussion with this research team on possible research opportunities for the undergraduates and staff members especially the Dean, Faculty of Engineering and the Head, Department of Interdisciplinary studies.
Third year civil engineering students of university of Jaffna visited irrigation systems in Northern Province on 30th Dec 2015. They have visited Vishwamadu, Kalmadu and Iranamadu irrigation schemes. This field visit was organized by Mr. Saliya Sampath. Students got the opportunity to view reservoirs and related structures such as canal, cross drainage and irrigation structures during the field visit.
Dr. Sivakumar and Sampath attended a seminar on “Capacity Improvement on Research Engagement” at Earl’s Regent hotel at Peradeniya 28th December 2015. This was sponsored by the NORAD WaSo Project attached to the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. Lectures was conducted in following topics: (i) ‘How to Get My Paper Published’, (ii) ‘How to Find Funding Opportunities’, (iii) ‘How to Write Winning Project Proposals’, (iv) ‘Experience of Engagement in International Research Projects’. Resource persons of this workshop were Prof. W.M. Tilakaratne, Prof. Harsha Ratnaweera, and Prof. S. B. Weerakoon.
