The Young Members Section (YMS) is one of the program included in the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka’s 109th Annual sessions. This was held on 21st October 2015 at the IESL head office in Colombo. Among the 17 papers presented, in this IESL YMS 2015, from Universities as well as Industries, two papers were from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. The papers were presented by (i) Mr. S. Sangar supervised by Ms. H. Krishanarajah and Dr. K. Velayuthamurthy and (ii) Mr. B. Shanthigan, coauthored by Ms. V. Tharshikka and supervised by Mr. S. Thananjeyan and Dr. V. Cynthujah. These were the first two papers from the undergraduates of the Faculty presented in a technical session. The faculty congratulates the success of these two students with their volunteer based projects under supervision of the Faculty staff members.
University of Western Australia donated a machine for waste-to-business project


A core team of staff members headed by Dr. Randika Jayasinghe, who is the Project Coordinator of the Australian – Sri Lankan University Partnerships to develop community-based waste recycling businesses from the University of Western Australia, visited to the Faculty on 20th October 2015. This project is mainly targeted to convert the waste materials into business for the community. Dr. P. Kathirgamanathan attended the QAA workshop
Quality Assurance and Accreditation (QAA) workshop organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Highways for the stakeholders, was held from 16th to 17th October 2015 at hotel Berjaya, Mount Lavinia. The workshop was attended by more than 120 participants from universities all over Sri Lanka. Dr. P. Kathirgamanathan, coordinator of the Faculty QAA cell attended the workshop.
Two solar panels were donated by Eng. K. Gnanalingam
Eng. K. Gnanalingam, who is a retired Additional General Manager from the Ceylon Electricity Board, donated two solar panels (Model- Phono Solar, Module type-PS250P-20/U) through his cousin Mr. Thirayambagan on 10th October 2015. This donation was to enhance students’ projects at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The donor is willing to use these solar panels to promote the use of Solar Energy in the country, which is blessed with very good sunshine.
Cricket matches between Faculty staff and students – organized by E/14 batch


A set of friendly cricket matches were organized between the Faculty staff and students on 7th and 8th October 2015. This was organized by the second batch (E/14) of students. It promotes good social harmony among the staff and students. This was organized in an excellent manner with three teams; staff, first batch and second batch of students. Very enjoyable set of matches, which led the staff to win the toss while students to win the match.
Students obtained third place and two merit awards at the “Undergraduate inventor of the year (UIY) 2015” competition


The Undergraduate Inventor of the Year (UIY) 2015 competition was established by the IESL to encourage and stimulate creativity and interest in inventions among engineering undergraduates and provide opportunities for engineering undergraduates to organize and present their original inventions. It’s also a forum for networking within engineering undergraduates in Sri Lanka as well as members of industry and academia.
First presentation of the postgraduate research degree program of the Faculty of Engineering was held on 2nd October 2015
The faculty of Engineering initiated the postgraduate research degree program through the Faculty of graduate studies of the University of Jaffna. The faculty initiated the postgraduate program by proposing the Board of Study in Engineering, covering engineering disciplines of Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering. Research and Development is important for the regional, national development of the country while sharing the knowledge internationally. As a result the Faculty of Engineering has opened another degree of services on Research and Development.
University Business Linkages (UBL) workshop
In good old days, Universities were fully recognized based on undergraduate teaching, then it was added with research and development. Today’s era it is also added with innovation and commercialization. As a result the UGC took initiative with German collaborators to conduct workshops at selected Universities. The first workshop for the University of Jaffna was conducted for three days from 28th September till 1st October 2015, at the conference hall of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science of the University of Jaffna with experts from Germany.
Training Program on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Northern Province of Sri Lanka


There are emerging problems associated with water resources planning, development and management in the Northern Province with the accelerated development work after the end of conflict. This program was conducted from 18th to 22nd September 2015, at the training center of the Faculty of Agriculture, University Jaffna located in Kanagarayankulam.
WaSo Asia Second Semi- annual meeting


WaSo Semi-Annual Meeting was held from 19th to 20th September 2015 at Tilko City Hotel, Jaffna. Professor Vasanthy Arasaratnam, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna participated as the chief guest. Prof. Harsha Ratnaweera, Prof. Tore Sætersdal and Miss. Anne Gry represented the Norwegian partners.
