Research Grant to Faculty of Engineering – Development of Electromagnetic Picking System for Weaving Loom

Development of Electromagnetic Picking System for Weaving Loom projects is carried out by Mr. Kamalaruban, Miss. K. Hamsathvanie and Ms. S. Selvalogini from the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. The research is selected among the competitive applications and the funding is received from University research grant, which commenced from September 2014. Considering the main scope of this research project, in weaving industry, the production has always been relied on picking speed, so the development of the picking system with optimum speed is vital to increase the economical production. Therefore, this study will open a new direction for small scale entrepreneurs while introducing industry base research to the Faculty.

Dr. S. Sivasegaram (former Senior Professor, University of Peradeniya) is visiting the faculty

Dr. S. Sivasegaram, who served as Senior Professor at the University of Peradeniya, is now doing visiting lectures in the Faculty. He is teaching Thermodynamics to the students from 12th September 2014. He graduated from the University of Ceylon with BScEng with First Class honours in 1964, completed his Diploma at Imperial College and obtained his MSc with Distinction from the University of London in 1967. Seminar on “Hypotheses of cultivating fresh water in the Jaffna Lagoons, is a challenge for Engineers and Environmentalists”.

This awareness research presentation was jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna, Institute of Engineers of Northern Provincial Centre, Jaffna Managers Forum and Jaffna Science Association Section B. It was held at the Faculty of Engineering on 11th August 2014. This presentation was based the research carried out by Eng. S. Kuganesan from Norway under Dr. S.S. Sivakumar’s supervision. This event was very successful with the participation of 94 participants including Secretary, former GA, Senior Academics, Directors and Engineers.

Tea-time with Teachers

On 9th August 2014, at the end of the semester 1, staff crew of the Faculty of Engineering engaged in a discussion with students to get their feedback about the completed semester. The discussion was arranged by the student counsellor of the Faculty.The discussion started with a tea party followed by some entertainment activities by both staff and students. Finally, a group of physicians comprised of a consultant and a medical doctor from Kilinochchi hospital lead by the Medical Superintend Dr. P. Karthikeyan, conducted a talk on “How to face challenges”.
